Airton, the Kitesurfer

Airton is 14 years old and lives on the Cape Verdean island of Sal, off the coast of West Africa. The island offers ideal conditions for his hobby: kitesurfing.

Every day finds him in the water with his board and his kite. He is currently being coached by his surrogate father, Libero. His biological father takes no interest in him, and his mother lives in abject poverty. Airton feels that Libero understands him. The two are rather like best friends forever. However, his biggest role model is the successful kitesurfing professional Mitú Monteiro, who also lives on the island. Airton would like to follow his example.

When Airton meets his idol on the beach at the village of Palmeira, he hopes that Mitú will share some of his kitesurfing tricks and stunts with him. Airton cannot imagine a better chance of receiving first-hand professional advice. Will his hopes be fulfilled?
