ARTE Re: Born prematurely – A difficult start in life

ARTE, 2017, 30 min.

Mina and Sofie were born four months too early. Without modern technology and constant supervision by doctors and nurses, they could not survive. The beginning of life is a grey area, both in medical and in ethical terms. When should premature babies be kept alive and when should they simply receive palliative care?

In Europe, there are different guidelines on this matter. Axel von der Wense, the medical director of Hamburg’s neonatal ICU, attends to premature babies like Mina and Sofie who find themselves on this boundary between life and death.
