When the Tagesschau first went on air at Christmas 1952, from the air-raid shelter on Hamburg’s Heiligengeistfeld, there was a pioneering spirit of adventure. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the most successful news programme on German television, the public-sector networks NDR and WDR take a look back at the early days.
