In the middle of Berlin, Aynur (Almila Bagriacik) is shot dead by her brother Nuri (Rauand Taleb) on the street. She unsuspectingly accompanied him to the bus stop, a few hundred meters away in the apartment sleeps her five-year-old son Can. How did this deed come about? Aynur tells her story in A REGULAR WOMAN. It is the story of a self-confident young woman who loves life and who knows exactly how she wants to live it. She escapes the violence of her marriage and doesn’t let her brothers and parents tell her what to do. She finds herself and Can her own apartment, does an apprenticeship, goes out and meets new friends and men. She knows that she is going against the traditions of her family and putting herself in danger, but her desire for freedom is greater. Until the insults and threats of her brothers become more and more serious. And at some point it is too late.

Emotionally and forcefully does director Sherry Hormann (Desert Flower) let Aynur in A REGULAR WOMAN speak for herself and tell the story of her own life and death. It’s the story of Hatun Aynur Sürücü, whose murder in 2005 caused an outcry. Based on research in her personal environment, court files, previously unpublished conversations with Aynur’s family, perpetrators, girlfriends and friends, and the crown witness who is still in the witness protection program, A REGULAR WOMAN creates the authentic picture of a life-hungry, freedom-loving and courageous young woman who struggles to be able to live self-determined. But as a German with Turkish-Kurdish roots, she finds herself in a constant conflict between the values of her family and her own attitude to life.

In the role of Aynur, shooting star Almila Bagriacik, who was last seen in 4 blocks among others, is enthusiastic. At her side play as her brothers Rauand Taleb – who also belongs to the 4 Blocks ensemble -, Aram Arami (Fack Ju Göhte), Armin Wahedi and Mehmet Atesci; Meral Perin as her mother, Mürtüz Yolcu as her father, Merve Aksoy as her sister and Lara Aylin Winkler as Aynur’s friend Evin. Other roles include Jacob Matschenz, Idil Üner and Lina Wendel. Judith Kaufmann is responsible for the picture design, Bettina Böhler for the montage. Fabian Römer and Jasmin Shakeri, among others, contribute the music for the film.
