Ten years after joining the European Union, the mood in Romania is explosive: hundreds of thousands are joining in protest rallies against the country’s corrupt regime. Their heroine, Laura Codruta Kövesi, is loathed by countless officials. Since 2013, the public prosecutor has been heading the anti-corruption directorate DNA. Kövesi has launched thousands of criminal proceedings investigating corruption, abuse of office and tax evasion, also against the leading ranks of the ruling PSD. The chairman of the party, Liviu Dragnea, – who is also the country’s shadow prime minister – has already been convicted of vote rigging. He is considered to be a key figure in the current political crisis and an arch enemy of Laura Codruta Kövesi. A man who says of himself that he never forgets…
